Coast to Coast
I have an addiction …I do and I admit it. But it’s an addiction that’s
actually really positive. More people should have it. Sounds crazy I know,
but let me explain
The Bose radio next to my bed has been tuned to KFI 6.40am for, gosh, it
must be fifteen years. Unless I’m out of town or on a very hot date, I always
attempt to get home by ten o’clock; so that I can climb into bed turn off the
lights, and in the cozy darkness wait to be transported into the fascinating
world of a 4 hour nightly show called ‘Coast to Coast,’ where on week
nights, the warm familiar voice of George Noory, introduces millions of
captivated listeners to his nightly guests, who in turn, introduce us to their
extraordinary world.
From Nobel Prize winning physicists, to astrologers, astronauts, or
eccentric builders of Time Machines. From specialists in every field of
traditional medicine, to psychic healers or Chinese herbalists, from a
Buddhist Rinpoche, to a dogmatic Catholic priest or a Satan worshipper,
every guest has published a book about his or her discoveries and or
experiences. Nothing is off limits and nothing is too bizarre.
There is no judgment on ‘Coast to Coast’.
I learned about the honeybee population disappearing months before I
read it in any newspaper, about the huge intricate crop circles that magically
appear overnight in the English countryside, and the fact that aliens have in
all probability visited our planet thousands of years before our civilization,
thousands of years before Area 51.
Sightings of Big Foot, or the giant birds with wingspans of up to sixty
feet keep me riveted. Stories about the hairless dog-like blood-sucking
Chupacabra terrify but also totally fascinate me.
I’ve also become aware of government cover-ups and conspiracy theories,
of HAARP, Contrails, the horrors of GMO’s, cancer cures thwarted by the
FDA, Alien Greys, Shadow People, Men in Black and the frightening Old
Hag.
I found ‘Coast to Coast’ quite by chance. Late one night unable to sleep
and surfing the dial, I heard a deep voice say “paranormal,” a word that
immediately got my attention on a subject that has always interested me.
So that’s how I started to listen to Art Bell, the host and innovator of the
original show. After that night I was hooked. During the lonely painful times
of a recently broken heart, it also helped me forget, and reminded me of all
that was really important in the world.
Some weekend nights, George Noory passes his microphone to Ian
Punnet, who actually spent years in a seminary, is incredibly smart very
funny and wide open to everything that comes his way on the show.
The great interviewer from Las Vegas George Knapp also takes over.
And most Saturdays, John B Mills whose deep sexy yet almost monotone
voice cuts through the airwaves, adding an even greater element of mystery.
I was thrilled to listen to writer Whitley Schreiber when he was
a guest on the show. Twenty-five years ago I read his best selling
book ‘Communion,’ and it had a huge impact on me. For weeks I was
deathly afraid of being alone in the house, in case the Greys suddenly
manifested by my bed at night, as they did to him.
Whitely is now also a sometime host on ‘Coast to Coast.’
The only downside to my nighttime addiction is constant lack of sleep.
However, to stay informed, and hear subjects seemingly never (able to be)
discussed on any other media outlet, it’s actually worth it. I feel a sense of
privilege to belong to this amazing ‘family.’
One of other things I find fascinating about this show are the people
that call in. Trucker’s call as they drive those long lonely freeways at night.
These men often away from home for days on end find ‘Coast to Coast’
an oasis in the dark. They have some wild stories to tell about things they
have seen out there on the road. These guys are a great body of humanity I
probably never would have really known about.
Maybe I’ll call in one of these days. Funny but I’m actually shy about
doing that. I’ll let you know if I do…but hopefully you’ll be listening.
